Multiple clinical and scientific studies have proven the positive effects of Low Level Laser Therapy. A wavelength of 650-680nm shows to be very effective in stimulating hair growth. This is red light. It is believed that the red light is absorbed by the skin, not by the sweat glands. For this reason, the energy system of the skin can be stimulated very specifically.
LLLT is effective against hair loss because the light allows for an increase in ATP (an important fuel for cells) in the cell nucleus at the molecular level. Additionally, the red laser light ensures improved blood circulation, allowing your hair follicles to receive more oxygen and nutrients and preventing the damaging DHT molecules to adhere to your hair roots.
Due to the improved blood circulation and energy management, the hairs become healthier and will grow quicker and thicker. Inactive hair follicles may become active again. In places with little hair growth, longer and more voluminous hair may start growing.
Laser therapy also helps to make a hair transplant more successful. The healing process will be quicker and better. Moreover, the quality of the hair will be better than without an after treatment.
Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) has been applied in medical science since the 70s. LLLT makes use of the effects that light of a specific wavelength has on the skin. Normal lamps produce light with a broad spectrum of wavelengths. Lasers, however, produce light with very specific wavelengths. This allows lasers to work very specifically and efficiently, they convert all energy into the desired wavelength. The therapy is used for many purposes. There are studies that show that it helps against, among others, rheumatism, eczema and skin aging. Moreover, laser therapy is said to accelerate the healing of wounds and injuries.
Since the 80s, various companies (such as the Australian company Lexington International and the Swedish company Laser Hair Care) have been involved in applying LLLT on hair loss. Initially, it was only possible to receive LLLT treatments in special clinics, whereby a cap was placed over the head of the patient using large machines. It was especially popular before and after the treatments at a hair transplant clinic. The laser light was said to restore the transplanted follicles faster. The Laser Hair Care caps are still widely used in hair clinics.
The first approved laser device for use at home
Due to continuous technological developments, laser diodes, the electronic components that generate the laser light, are becoming smaller and cheaper. Because of this, it became possible for Lexington to also develop a device that could be used at home: the HairMax LaserComb. It is a device that looks like a comb and contains several low level lasers on the bottom. Lexington has put a lot of effort into getting the effect of it as a hair growth device officially recognized by the American FDA. For this, major independent research has been conducted back in 2005 to unequivocally demonstrate the effect in balding men. In 2007, the FDA announced that they accepted the research and approved the LaserComb as a hair growth device. This was a historic moment: the LaserComb became the third officially approved hair growth treatment in history, after minoxidil and finasteride.
Further development: laser helmets
Laser therapy has accelerated in the past few years. Due to the success of the laser comb, laser therapy for the treatment of hair loss is becoming increasingly popular. A lot of people who noticed their hair was thinning, wanted to improve their hair growth without nasty side effects. The labor-intensive treatment with a laser comb was a big disadvantage. Every day, the hair was supposed to be combed for a duration of 15 minutes. This led to tired arms and frustration because it is difficult to shine light equally over the entire scalp.
For this reason, more powerful and user friendly devices were being developed: the laser helmets for use at home. A laser helmet, a helm with lasers in it at clinical strength, solves this problem by irradiating the entire scalp simultaneously and evenly. The treatment is now entirely "hands-free". Also, laser combs only contain 9 lasers, while the modern laser helmet provides a much more powerful treatment by using 50 to even 80 lasers. This makes the laser helmet an effective and easy way to treat hair loss and to allow thinning hair to grow better. The maturity of laser helmets is also confirmed because several helmets have received medical approval as a hair growth device by the American FDA. This can only be achieved if proper research has shown that the device actually improves hair growth.
Apart from its proven effectiveness, the use of a laser helmet is very efficient, easy to use and - in the long term - cost effective. Below, we will list the benefits of a laser helmet.
Durable treatment method
You can benefit from these powerful and user friendly laser helmets for years. It is a one-time purchase, after which you can undergo as many treatments as you wish. A laser helmet is effective as a stand-alone treatment in virtually all stages of hair loss.
Ease of use
A laser helmet is the easiest treatment against hair loss. You place the helmet on your head and turn it on with a press on the button. The treatment will automatically stop when it has been finished. The treatment works with light, so nothing needs to be added to the scalp. This (also) makes a laser helmet very suitable for people who for example do not wish to or can not apply a lotion 2 times per day.
Hands free
The treatment is not only very simple, you will also have your hands free. With the Theradome, you can even walk freely during your treatment. A laser helmet therefore provides you with all possible freedom during the treatment to do other things. Additionally, it will be easily possible to fit the 2 to 3 treatments per week into even the busiest schedules.
No side effects
Laser therapy has no side effects and is a completely safe treatment. It works purely by means of light on the skin. What is also nice to know, is that the lasers produce virtually no heat during the treatment of 20 minutes.
We have one of the most effective laser helmets against hair loss in our range: the Theradome laser helmet. It has been scientifically tested in a double blind test whereby the laser helmet was compared with a placebo (a device without laser light). The results showed that the helmet works well against hair loss in both men and women. Based on this, the Theradome laser helmet has been approved by the American FDA as a medical device to stimulate hair growth. It is the most simple and worry-free way to make your hair fuller and thicker.
The Theradome laser helmet contains 80 lasers with 678nm of light. Due to the wireless operation, it provides you with all possible freedom during the treatment to do other things. Because of the built-in battery, you will have enough power for 4 to 5 wireless treatments by charging it once. Use the Theradome 2 times a week, 20 minutes per treatment.

A laser helmet is suitable for both men and women and all stages of hair loss and thinning hair. For hair loss at an advanced stage, no research results are available. Therefore, a laser helmet is definitely effective in beginning to moderate hair loss.
A laser helmet is also a good preventive treatment against hair loss. After all, it is easier to prevent hair loss than to reactivate sleeping hair follicles. By using a laser helmet, you will combat the possible shrinking of hair follicles. This ensures the hair follicles to remain provided with nutrients and the hair will continue growing.
Another reason to recommend a laser helmet is when it proves to be difficult to continue applying a treatment for a longer period of time. Additionally, it is the best choice when you are looking for a product that requires minimal time and effort.
Use the laser helmet for 2 to 3 times per week for about 20 minutes. Read and follow the instructions of the respective laser helmet for the specific recommendations of use.
Research shows that the laser helmet ensures for thicker and easier to handle hair, less hair loss and new hair growth after three to four months. After 18 to 26 treatments, further hair loss is prevented. After about 52 treatments, the laser helmet will allow the hair to grow again.
For laser therapy, the same applies as in sports: you have to continue doing it for it to (remain) profitable. When you have achieved the desired results, we recommend to continue the treatments with intervals of about five days.
The laser helmet was designed and tested as a stand-alone treatment against hair loss. It is proven effective in all stages of hair loss and thinning hair. For hair loss at a very advanced stage, no research results are available. So, in principle, it is not necessary to use other hair growth stimulating products in addition to the use of a laser helmet. For hair loss at an advanced stage or worse, we do recommend to use at least one more treatment in addition to the laser helmet. The treatments all work in their own unique ways on hair growth and a combination of treatments therefore has a larger effect.
Of course, healthy hair and a healthy scalp are an important basis for hair growth and will be important to achieve best results. Experiencing hair loss often comes hand in hand with inflammation, and can also be associated with fungus. Addressing both of these issues will lead to a much more successful course of LLLT. That is why it is important to wash your hair with a high quality shampoo such as Neofollics shampoo, Regenepure DR or Revita shampoo. These shampoos are effective against dandruff, itching and seborrheic dermatitis caused by fungus and care for a healthy scalp. Furthermore, they stimulate hair growth for an additional effect. These shampoos can be alternated with a nourishing and thickening shampoo, such as Keratin thickening shampoo.
Laser therapy works very well in preoperative patients and in patients that have undergone a hair transplant. A transplant damages the surrounding hairs. A laser helmet reduces this effect and contributes to the growth of newly transplanted hair follicles by accelerating the healing process, reducing redness and discomfort and stimulating a faster growth of transplanted hair.
