Tinea capitis
What is tinea capitis?
Tinea capitis, also known as head fungus, is an infection of the scalp and hair follicles caused by fungi. Tinea capitis is usually seen in children older than 6 years and before puberty, with African-American children being the most affected group. The condition is characterised by itching, redness and scaling of the scalp. In severe cases, it can lead to bald patches and hair loss. The infection can be caused by several types of fungi, including Trichophyton and Microsporum.
What are the causes of tinea capitis?
Tinea capitis is caused by dermatophytes, a type of fungi that infect the outer layer of the skin and hair follicles. The infection can be transmitted by direct contact with an infected person or animal, as well as by sharing infected objects such as combs, hats and towels. Tinea capitis is thus highly contagious, so it is important to ensure good hygiene and thoroughly clean or avoid infected objects. Moist and warm environments promote the growth of these fungi, making it easier for the infection to spread in communities such as schools and nurseries.
Characteristics of tinea capitis in a child
Recognising tinea capitis can sometimes be tricky, but there are some obvious symptoms to look out for. One of the first signs is often a dry, flaky scalp that resembles dandruff. In addition, the scalp may become red and inflamed, indicating an active infection. Round, bald patches may appear where hair falls out, which is a characteristic symptom of this condition. Children may also complain of itching or sores on the scalp. In some cases, small black dots remain where the hair has broken off.
How can tinea capitis be treated?
The treatment of tinea capitis usually involves a combination of oral and topical antifungals. According to a study on Tinea capitis a treatment requires at least an oral antifungal agent. The study found several oral antifungals to be effective for the treatment of tinea capitis, namely terbinafine, itraconazole, fluconazole and griseofulvin. Terbinafine, itraconazole and fluconazole are promising because they have similar efficacy to griseofulvin, but with a shorter treatment duration. Griseofulvin is one of the oldest and most traditional treatments for tinea capitis. Although it is still effective, the treatment duration is often longer than newer agents. As a result, these newer agents are often chosen instead of the traditional griseofulvin
In addition, topical antifungal products can be used to reduce the spread of fungus on the scalp. An effective ingredient within the treatments we offer is Piroctin Olamine. Known for its antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties, it is gentle on the scalp. In addition, the ingredient reduces hair loss, stimulates hair growth, creates thicker hair and is effective against dandruff. It is important to follow a full treatment even when symptoms improve, to prevent relapse.
