For an effective treatment with ketoconazole shampoo, it is important to follow the correct usage and dosage instructions. You can use Regenepure DR shampoo daily, especially if you suffer from scalp problems like seborrhoeic eczema or severe dandruff.
Do you notice your hair feeling a bit drier over time because of the 1% ketoconazole? Then you can choose to reduce the frequency to 3–4 times a week and not wash your hair on the other days.
Leave the shampoo on for 3-5 minutes to give the active ingredients time to do their job. Afterwards, rinse your hair thoroughly to remove all residues of the shampoo.
Ketoconazole was developed for the control of dandruff and itching. Ketoconazole shampoo with a high concentration is a drug that is prescribed to people with seborrheic dermatitis or severe dandruff. Multiple researches to study the effectiveness of this substance have shown that it stimulates hair growth and helps against hereditary hair loss. Various studies have shown that Ketoconazole can be effective against hair loss in three ways:
The use of ketoconazole in a shampoo thus has multiple functions. It fights against dandruff and at the same time, it combats hair loss and even stimulates regrowth.
Because Ketoconazole has the effect of slightly drying out the hair, it is recommended to combine Ketoconazole shampoo with a conditioner or to alternate Ketoconazole with a milder shampoo. Leave the shampoo on for a few minutes and then rinse the hair well.
Medical Ketoconazole shampoos such as Nizoral, Aurobindo, Actavis and Mylan contain 2% Ketoconazole. These can only be purchased at the pharmacy on prescription. The high concentration gives a slightly higher efficacy against strong dandruff, but also has a major disadvantage. It dries out the scalp and hair, which means that it can only be used for shorter periods in succession. To inhibit hair loss, long-term use is necessary and therefore a 1% concentration is also effective and much more pleasant to use. This concentration is also still effective against dandruff and seborrhoeic eczema.
It is fair to say that side effects may occur when using this shampoo. In some cases, people experience skin symptoms like itching, burning, redness and scaling.
Also, abruptly discontinuing a treatment is not recommended. This is because this can also cause irritation. If you use the shampoo and are not satisfied or experience side effects, it is therefore advisable to phase it out in two to three weeks.

Ketoconazole is the most well-known, but it is not the only proven anti-dandruff ingredient in shampoos which stimulates hair growth. Piroctone olamine has a similar effect as Ketoconazole. Research shows (number 3 above) that both ingredients have a positive effect on multiple aspects of hair growth. They have a similar effect on itch and dandruff. Piroctone olamine generally scores better when it comes to hair growth.

Another remedy that was strong against dandruff was zinc pyrithione. This is a coordination complex of zinc and pyrithione with antifungal and antibacterial activity.
