Effectiveness under the microscope: Microneedling therapy with a dermaroller
Research on microneedling
Several studies have been done on the effects of microneedling. Microneedling works because it stimulates special cells in the skin, especially the dermal papilla (DP) cells. These cells are important for hair growth and are stimulated by proteins and factors involved in wound healing. Microneedling activates stem cells and triggers growth factors. In studies on people with hair loss, the group that received microneedling along with another hair growth stimulating product was found to have significantly better results in hair growth than the group that used a hair growth stimulating product alone. This suggests that microneedling is a safe and effective method to promote hair growth.
We have reviewed two studies on microneedling, the main results of which we are happy to share.
Microneedling combined with Minoxidil in men
The first study compared the effect of Minoxidil with the effect of Minoxidil combined with the use of the dermaroller. The study was conducted on 100 men with Alopecia Androgenetica (AGA) over a 12-week period. Below are the main results from the study:
- The increase in the number of hairs per cm2 was significantly greater in the group that also used the dermaroller. In the group using the dermaroller, the increase was over 91 hairs, while there was an increase of 22.2 hairs in the group using Minoxidil alone.
- Independent experts rated 40% of dermaroller users as having reasonably to greatly improved hair conditions.
- 82% of dermaroller users reported experiencing an improvement of 50% or more in their hair situation.
reported great improvement.
Fair to strong improvement
Microneedling combined with hair growth stimulating ingredients and placebo
Another study was conducted on women with different types of hair loss, including telogen effluvium and alopecia areata. In all women, one part of the scalp was treated with microneedling combined with a topical lotion containing hair growth-stimulating ingredients over a period of 5 weeks. The other part was treated with microneedling and saline (placebo). The main results from the study are described below:
- The side treated with both dermaroller and topical lotion showed an increase of 12.7 hairs per cm2.
- In contrast, on the side treated with both dermaroller and saline, there is an average decrease of 4.2 hairs per cm2.
Based on both studies, it can be concluded that using a dermaroller in combination with topical treatment (Minoxidil or other hair growth lotions) gives better results than topical treatment alone.
How to use a dermaroller?
Choosing the right dermaroller is the first important step for an effective and safe microneedling treatment. For beginners, we recommend starting with a dermaroller with a needle length of 0.3 mm. If you are specifically aiming to stimulate beard or moustache growth, a 0.5 mm dermaroller is more suitable. For this, we have a special beard roller from Neofollics in our range. Choosing the right dermaroller ensures a balanced approach, where you can achieve the desired results without unnecessary discomfort.
Optimal use of the dermaroller
When rolling the dermaroller over the scalp, it is important to apply little pressure. The aim is to make the skin more penetrable without causing damage. Roll in regular patterns over the area to be treated, preferably in combination with a topical lotion for improved absorption.
When it comes to how often you should use a dermaroller, studies show that a weekly dermaroller treatment is already effective. A low frequency of once a week is enough to achieve positive results. If you do want to use the dermaroller more often, it is advised not to do so more than 2–3 times a week. This will give your skin enough time to recover after each treatment.
Hygienic cleaning process of great importance
After each treatment, it is very important to clean the dermaroller thoroughly. Rinse it under hot tap water and shake it dry. Disinfect the needles by placing them in an alcohol concentration or spray for about three minutes. After use, store the dermaroller in the box provided. Avoid using chemical cleaners, steam or a dishwasher, as these can damage the dermaroller.
Hygiene is very important, so do not share the dermaroller with others to avoid possible infections. It is also important not to use the dermaroller with skin diseases or damage, and in case of hypersensitivity or complaints, stop using it immediately. If complaints occur in combination with the use of topical lotions, we recommend stopping the dermaroller immediately. Carefully following these guidelines will help ensure an effective and safe dermaroller experience.
How does a dermaroller enhance the effect of other hair growth stimulating products?
Using a dermaroller can enhance the effectiveness of topical lotions and beard serums, such as Spectral.DNC-N (Nanoxidil) and Neofollics beard lotion, by promoting better absorption into the skin. Neofollics scalp lotion is also perfect to combine with a dermaroller. The lotion will be better absorbed by the skin. As a result, the effect of the lotion can be up to 5 times more effective. Moreover, using the dermaroller on its own, separate from a lotion, also has a positive impact on hair growth.
It is important to proceed with caution when using the dermaroller at the same time as a lotion or serum. The increased absorption can cause side effects that do not normally occur when using the lotion, such as skin irritation. It is therefore essential to keep an eye on how your skin reacts to the treatment.
Build up gradually with lotion and derma roller
If you have not used a lotion before or have switched to another lotion, we recommend not using the dermaroller at the same time as the (new) lotion. First try the lotion for a fortnight and observe how your skin reacts. After that, you can consider adding the dermaroller to your routine.
To reduce the chances of a hypersensitive skin reaction, we recommend a 12-hour period between using the dermaroller and applying the lotion or serum. Although our lotions normally have few side effects and contain milder ingredients, we recommend building up use gradually and monitoring your skin's reaction.
